Save your skin!

I'm getting so excited for summer and you know why--this year I'm going to take care of my skin and actually use sunblock instead of baby oil. It's definitely a slow transition though--I've started using hawaiin tropic #4 tanning oil. For me this is a huge step in the right direction--it may not seem like it--but it is!

Now here is the best part--any Will Ferrell fans out there? He's coming out with his own suntan lotion! Once I heard the news; that was my deciding factor. Who wouldn't want to walk around with these bottles of suntan lotion!

What's In A Name?

I was with one of my co-workers driving to pick up lunch the other day and she began complaining about the condition of her recently purchased designer watch. The watch she was wearing had a white leather band and was purchased from a high-end accessories designer for $160(sale price). The white leather was already wearing out and making the watch appear dingy. I said to her “isn’t it funny how you think when you pay big bucks for designer merchandise that you don’t actually always receive a higher quality product” I don’t know about you but when I spend my money on a product I don’t just want to pay for some designers name to be on the item, I want the item to be well made.

Out at sea with NKOTB!

Well, it's already here and gone. I can't believe it! I'm still glowing from the trip and thrilled with the experience. It was TOTALLY worth it. I was never one of those girls who knew every detail about the New Kids on the Block. As a matter of fact I recall my friend laughing hysterically at me for saying Joey's last name wrong in HS. It's sheer blasphemy, I know, for any hardcore NKOTB fan.

We boarded the ship on Friday 5/15 and the guys came out for a big sail away party. They sang and greeted fans and were just cool guys! There were games, Q&A sessions, concerts and plenty of opportunities to meet the guys, including a photo session that I'll never forget! We were photographed in somewhat random groups of 10. I walked right up to Jonathan, we very politely shook hands and I said "if it's not too forward, may I sit on your lap?" Remember that line from Dirty Dancing "I carried a watermelon!" yeah, that's me! Can't wait to get the picture though!!

The previous day we had a near collision with Donnie and Danny and their security guards in the hallway as they judged the door decorating contest. Danny turned to my friends and I and said "Do any of you have a Sharpie?" We very quietly shook our heads and replied "noooooo." haha Then we all but ran away. I've never thought of myself as being the kind of girl who gets star struck, but it was just so cool to be on this huge ship and randomly run into these guys!

So, I had an amazing time and would do it again in a heartbeat. It was a great kickoff to the summer. The metrostyle clothes I bought were perfect for the hot Bahamas weather. There is one important lesson to be learned though. When you have a specific dress you're planning on wearing to an event, make sure you have similar straps on your bathing suit! (photo is NOT me)

Have a super-fantastic summer everyone!

Guys and Shoes

It really drives me crazy when guys don't know what shoes to wear with their clothes. It's annoying to see a guy wearing a really nice outfit with...sneakers or wearing a more casual outfit, like jeans, with a dressy pair of shoes. I don't really get what makes it so difficult for men to understand what shoes to put on with what outfit...it's not rocket science! I guess it just comes easier for the female population, and we know right away what shoes to wear, or bettet yet what NOT to wear. Guys really need to start taking notice of what they put on their feet because it's something a lot of ladies notice...don't you agree?

There are just some things men will never be able to do without the help of a smart, stylish woman. Picking out their shoes will probably always be one of them! Do you ever have to pick out your husband's, boyfriend's, brother's, son's or even dad's shoes?? Because I do! MEN!!!

Don't Label Me

I used to buy only expensive, designer label clothing. I really was convinced they looked better! Then, as with everyone else, money started to get a little tighter and I started to look for ways to cut my expenses. So I decided to try mixing in some value brand fashions.

I’ll admit, while I liked the look of the items I saw at metrostyle, I really thought it was too inexpensive to be of any quality. But I bought a few items and loved the fit and fun colors. While not all the fabrics are as nice as my designer ones, I can still mix them in and no one is the wiser. In fact, I still get just as many compliments…I guess I don’t need the label to look good after all!

The Crazy Things Kids Say

My 4-year-old nephew, Austin, is the funniest person I know. You just never know what he is going to say!

For example, while making a Mother’s Day Card at preschool, the kids were given some open-ended questions and asked to answer in their own words. Austin's answers:

My mom is... 33 years old, just like my dad.

My mom is the prettiest when... she wears her pink slippers.

My mom likes to... pretend I'm a little piece of dirt.

My mom always says, "I'm going to vacuum you, you little piece of dirt."

My mom is funny when she... tries to vacuum my sister, too.

Of course, my sister then had to explain to Austin’s preschool teachers that whenever she pulls out the vacuum, it becomes a game. He runs around the living room and she’ll chase him, saying things like, "Oh, look! There's a little piece of dirt on the floor! I need to vacuum that up!" He laughs and jumps onto a piece of furniture. Fun, right?

Of course, it really doesn’t sound quite right in a Mother’s Day card…

White Wedding??

Ahhh weddings!!! So beautiful. The bride; glowing, the flowers; perfectly bloomed, the food; magnificent. The bridesmaids…fighting???

Bridesmaid drama has been going on for years and will continue on for more years to come. “I hate the dress”, “this is too expensive”, “I can’t stand ____.” Fill in the blank. You name it, they will complain about it. If you are a lucky bride you will never know of this drama. One minute they are arguing with one another and giving attitude, the next, they are all smiles walking down the aisle, you as the bride are none the wiser..clueless of the petty arguments that are happening behind your back.

The arguing is not because the girls are mad at the bride. It’s the multiple personalities clashing and trying to plan events that everyone needs to agree on. Each person needs their opinion heard. We are all contributing our time and money, so I understand being vocal, but sometimes there is a line that should not be crossed. It needs to be understood that we are all different, and we all like different things, but the end goal is to make the bride have fun and be happy! How can that happen if everyone is focused on themselves and what they want?

The bride has picked each girl for a reason, she loves them and wants them to share her special day, and she feels they have something to contribute to her wedding day. What I am finding though is that “something special” can sometimes be a bad attitude…

The Joy of Motherhood

Tantrum in the grocery store, flying graham crackers in the car on the way home, spilled sippy cup all over the floor. Nap anyone? Yes please! Oh wait, it’s not for me. Put the little ones down. Clean the dishes, fold the laundry, prepare the dinner. Oops, baby crying…”breaks” over. Load up the stroller, hit the park for the 37th day in a row.

Anyone hear me out there? It’s a thankless job. But at the risk of sounding cheesy, it’s the best job you could ever have.

While my family acknowledged my hard work on my “special” day, I took the time to think about how lucky I am to have these little guys. The “love note” in black crayon on the freshly painted wall somehow seemed endearing and when my daughter slept through the night for the first time in a year, I thought it was nothing short of a miracle.

All you mamas out there deserve a round of applause….Happy Mothers Day! I hope you treated yourself to something nice….whether it be from us here at metrostyle or anywhere else!!

Ladies: What do you think?

Okay so I was on vacation and I happened to take notice of what men were wearing. I think what started it all was the man in the short-shorts! I wear short-shorts on occasion but I’ve never owned a pair that were near as short nor as tight as this man's shorts!! I couldn’t help but laugh; hopefully I turned my ahead away in time—wouldn’t want to hurt his feelings. He obviously thought he looked fantastic. I’m not opposed to men in short-shorts but it’s a tough look to pull off! If you men out there have the body to rock those short-shorts, then all the power to ya! I personally prefer my men in longer shorts, but that’s just my preference. What do you ladies think? Are the shorts in this photo acceptable?

Q&A: What's the best style for me?

Dear metrostyle fashion team:
I have skinny legs. I love dresses, shirts, shorts. What is the best style for me? ~ Gloria

Hi Gloria.

There are lots of different styles of dresses shorts and skirts you can wear. The key is to keep the style in proportion to your silhouette. So if you have skinny legs, you'll want to look for "skinny" or straight silhouettes. Avoid styles with a lot of volume: full skirts, wide legs, etc.

For dresses, a sheath or chemise style would be great on you. Of course, if you don't want to show your legs at all, the maxi dress is a super hot trend that works on almost anyone!

For skirts, look for a pencil silhouette or even a column silhouette if you prefer a longer length. The key here is to show just the right amount of leg...avoid ultra-short mini skirts and anything with too much volume.

Last but not least - shorts! Here, it's particularly important to stay away from styles that are baggy. Instead, look for Bermuda shorts or walking shorts that fit close to the leg...both styles are super hot right now, so you'll have a lot of options.

Hope this helps!

Allie

Closet Mayhem!

Spring is here and I find myself unable to resist the temptation of purchasing new Spring Fashions. The downfall of this is I have yet to put away my winter clothes and I find that my closet is becoming hard to “shop”.

I find that I wait longer every year before putting away my winter wardrobe because the minute I pack it all up and stow it away in typical New England fashion I find that its colder than I anticipated and I find myself digging through totes looking for a warmer outfit.

I know that in order to look my best I need to get my closet in shape. A clean closet increases dressing efficiency and leaves me with more time for my hair and makeup. Am I the only one who waits this long to put away last season’s wardrobe before stuffing their closet with this season’s treasures?

Mother vs. Daughter

My teenage daughter thinks she knows fashion better than I do. She is dead wrong. I think she forgets where I work and thinks I have no clue. Her fashion is t-shirt, jeans, sweatshirt, and sneakers. I on the other hand always try looking my best with the latest trends plus working in women’s apparel is an advantage. You would think that being brought up by me she would have the same sense of style but not my daughter. She actually thinks that I over dress. Wearing a blouse with accessories and a pair of jeans isn’t overdressed. Who knows maybe she is trying to get back at me. Mothers do tend to ruin their teenage daughters life like that was the only reason we had them, the joy. I just hope one day I get to see her wear something else besides a t-shirt, jeans, sweatshirt, and sneakers.
